Picture Perfect - featuring Chris Ling Photographers
by Ming Lee, 1 September 2004
Never let a shoestring budget convince you that wedding photography is only optional. This is especially so, when it's Chris Ling, one of Singapore's most illustrious wedding lensmen, on the other side of the camera.
"It is very tempting to splurge on items like honeymoon and food," says the 38-year-old veteran, who snapped his first pictures in 1993. "But what will help you relive those happy wedding moments are the photographs."
In Chris's confident words, "my photographs capture the 'mood' of a wedding. Each brings out not only the whimsical emotional mix of joy and anxiety, but also important details on key items like the gown, bouquet and jewellery."
Up until four months ago, a wedding photography package by Chris remained out of reach for most budget-conscious couples. A quick glance at his works, which include studio and actual-day photography of the nuptials of MediaCorp actresses, and we can see why. Looking at his pictures will move and make anyone envious of the couple so blissfully united together.
With the recent re-naming of Chris Ling Photography to Chris Ling Photographers, he intends to provide a more well-rounded service to clients. The team he has hand-picked, and which he heads, comprises three photographers, a manager, an operation executive and three graphic designers. This way, clients can expect personal service as well as quality works.
"Chris Ling Photographers (pertaining to photography) is the largest of its kind in the local bridal scene," he shares. "I'm very thrilled by this, because it means the name 'Chris Ling' has become sort of a brand in the industry."
This availability of in-house staff has paved the way for introduction of new packages, among them being ROM studio photography, ROM photography and actual day photography. It has also allowed Chris to roll out more affordably priced packages. These days, a studio photography package with 20 pieces of 8R photographs starts from $700.
"Every couple needs a set of nice photographs to remember the most important day of their lives by. So, if I can help make it more affordable for them, I want to." he says.
And for couples with that little extra cash to spare, they can always opt for the overseas wedding photography package. Chris, whose work has taken him to cities like Melbourne, Paris and Venice, reveals that taking your wedding shots in foreign countries will definitely make the experience more memorable.
How should we go about choosing a photography package, then? Offers Chris, "First, you have to trust the photographer. After all, it is definitely not his first time going through this. I'm fortunate in the sense that I get along well with people, even strangers. In fact, the ability to make the couple laugh is a big bonus in this job. Once, I even had to act as the mediator when the bride got angry with the groom because he was late for the photoshoot."
"Then, you have to like the style of photography. Personally, I don't think it's any easier or tougher between shooting in Orchard Road or Emerald Hill. Each has its own beauty. It's your wedding, so you are the key element. And you have to be confident and happy in the photographs."
And while Chris declines to describe a favourite shot - he believes he gets better with every photograph - he suggests a 30:70 proportion between black-and-white and colour shots in the album.
"While black-and-white photographs are more timeless, too many can make the album very dull," he explains with a smile. "Having more colour photographs makes the event more vivid when you flip through the pages later on. Surely, that's how you want to remember your wedding by?"
