Ramblings of a woman in love (sometimes
out of love) Part 2
A Little Valentine's Day Story

Sometimes
I think I love him so much that my world will cease to exist without
him around. Sometimes, he irritates the heck out of me that I just
wish he would disappear from the surface of this world. What is
it about him that triggers such strong emotions and feelings?
It was two weeks away from Valentine's Day.
The vibes were in the air. Everywhere I went, it was screaming
out "It's Valentine's Day!". Walked past a restaurant, there would
be a sign up posting the special dinner and reminding couples to
book early. Went into Tower Records, love songs would be blasting.
Bookshops, cakeshops, giftshops, you name it, it is there. And
nothing symbolizes Valentine's Day like flowers.
And everyone knows how much women love to receive flowers. Noticed
how I said love to receive flowers, and not love flowers? I'm sure
I don't speak for everyone, but I think a lot of us out there really
just enjoy the thrill of receiving the flowers, in plain view of
everyone. C'mon, think about the last time someone sent flowers
to your office. When the receptionist came waltzing in with that
bouquet in her hand, didn't your heart skip a beat and wish that
it's for you? And when she walked past you to hand the bouquet
to the colleague sitting behind you, didn't you feel a sharp sense
of loss, of disappointment? But hey, if it had been for you, that
moment was truly priceless. For that moment, you're the envy of
every woman in that room. It's an incredible feeling, no?
And the worst is Valentine's Day. It's past lunchtime, and everyone
who's attached had received their bouquets and your workstation
is still devoid of flowers. Lousy feeling, right? I'm pretty sure
I'm not alone here. (Hey, I've got friends who would take leave
just in case their supremely dense boyfriends believed them when
they said 'No need for flowers this year').
I guess it must be pretty confusing for guys. For the whole of
January, I was nagging at him, trying to make him promise not to
spend $120 on flowers for me. And believe me, I meant it, every
word of it. At that time.
Then came February, and I wasn't so sure anymore, what with the
love vibes in the air. I was sure that I was gonna be the only
one in the office without flowers. But it's really a trivial matter,
so I decided to let it go. (Secretly hoping against hope that he
would send anyway).
And well, he listened to me. No flowers for me that year. Well,
when we went for dinner that Valentine's night, I was unusually
quiet. And black-faced. And he didn't have a clue why. But I couldn't
tell him it was the flowers that did it. After all, I made the
poor guy promise not to buy me flowers. See? I didn't even have
a right to get angry at him.
But he's my boyfriend! Ain't he supposed to really understand
me? And hey, everyone knows that you're supposed to buy flowers
for your girlfriends on Valentine's Day!? Well, as long as it's
a working day. If it's a weekend, save it, no one knows, so don't
bother.
So, I remember sitting across the dinner table that Valentine's
Night, and thinking, "Why doesn't he GET me?" And I was so upset
with him (or perhaps it's with myself?) that I just wish I was
home alone. I just wish he wasn't even there in my life.
Then he reached across with loving eyes and held my hand. And
he told me he loved me and whipped out a tiny blue box. I stopped
breathing for awhile, it's that signature Tiffany blue!
It turned out that he's bought me those lovely pearl ear-studs
that I had been eyeing all year! And I immediately flew straight
up to Cloud Nine.
Whoa! Men! They can make you so infuriated, and they can make
you feel so loved. Men! You can't live with them, you can't live
without them! The moral of the story is: Guys, if you didn't send
flowers on Valentine's Day, you'd better make sure you've something
better than flowers by dinner time!
